I'm in the open beta now.
Destroyed a pile of borg drones, spheres and cubes so far.
I'm happy !

It's early days ... looks very Trekky (in a cartoony'ish way?), space combat looks promising, ground combat currently a steaming pile of lagfest.
Its definately fun while its free - hopefully they'll get the client/server bugs ironed out before the end of the month.
I'm trying to remember to log into the betty vent while playing in case anyone wants to ask WTF was I thinking of when I ordered it
[Edited on 12-1-2010 by ClanBones]
Argh ... level loading between various ground/space zones is annoying ... it's kinda random - you either connect to the zone or disconnect from the
server.
And everytime you log back in, it's as fiddly as trying to thread a burning cat through the eye of a needle ...
[Edited on 12-1-2010 by ClanBones]
1st space combat mission - found several alien artifacts floating around in space and looted a whole new ship weapons system. Yay?
[Edited on 12-1-2010 by ClanBones]
Space combat is definately fun !

yeah space combat looks good, how does it compare with pirates of the burning sea?
sounds like the game is exactly like pirates atm lol, lag in ports and okay when ship battling.

Thanks Dirge - I was struggling to think what STO space combat reminded me of so much - POTBS is spot on ! Without having to take into account the
prevailing solar wind ...
Space combat is kind of a 3rd person shooter - you need to keep manouvering your ship so as to keep your target within the firing arc of your various
weapons.
The starter ship I'm currently flying has primary weapon slots in fore/aft positions fitted with standard phaser banks that each do relatively low
damage but with wide firing arcs that overlap round to the sides - by keeping my target to one side means I can fire both banks at the same time.
The ion disrupters I looted do way more damage but have limited firing arcs so are only suitable for head-on engagements. I like head-on engagements
("Eat ion plasma you filthy Orion pirate scum!!")
So far, its been loads of Borg, Orion pirates and 1 Klingon bird of prey (an unintentional encounter that sent me back to a starbase with a painful
repair bill)
If you haven't already worked it out - The space combat side of STO is my favorite Hopefully when the server throughput gets tuned up and made more stable, the ground-side stuff will become less of a chore.

Is the combat varied enought to make it less of a grind? Grouped up for space missions? Sounds like lots of ships may be lots of fun.
Read that the progression was in jumps of 10 so you get a promotion after so long. Hope that doesn't stop you grouping with the tier below.

Missions so far have been explore / rescue / escort / destroy - pretty standard mmo fare so far, I'll soon find out how varied they can get.
Combat tactics - both ground & space - have the opportunity to become fairly involved as they involve you collecting Officer NPCs of varying abilities
& skills to either accompany you in away missions or man your ship consoles, then assigning them various modes (Assist / Buff / Heals / Repairs /
DeBuff / Crowd Control / etc) prior to combat that they automatically follow unless given direct orders to use other abilities. Set up right - you can
then just concentrate on whatever your objectives are and they'll take care of the flack, or you can micro-manage the entire proceedings if you're a
control-freak
I don't yet know what the allowable grouping level differences are or what penalties apply, but it's definately oriented to large fleet
engagements.
Level progression - you start off with the rank of Officer and go though rank promotions up to Admiral - complete with desk, office & paperwork to
sign
Each rank is split into 10 levels - I'm currently a level 3 Officer - 7 more levels and I get another rank pin to add to my collar
Each rank unlocks a new tier of skill trees & Federation equipment that you can qualify to use. Character customisation is through allocating skill XP
to your own class skill tree, you also aquire Officer XP to spend on your various Officers that you aquire through missions, levelling and discovering
by chance.
And the ingame currency is energy.

Finally met up with another Inbreeder in-game !
Shame the team missions are still so buggy, but at least I got to introduce BlackKnight to the joys of fondling tribbles for health purposes
Equip your bridge officers with one each, sit back, and be amazed at the resulting disturbing scenes of group tribble-molestation ...

I kid thee not - Tribbles give buffs !
If that's not incentive enough to stump up the £153 lifetime subscription fee, then you have no soul ...

It is a good game despite the bugs it has, I've managed to get the next class of ship and gone for escort for dps which I'm loving if only I could
remember it can't tank too well.. and yeah thanks for the Tribble tip I'm swapped in them now :s
I am tempted for the life time subscription though...

lord of the rings was the lifetime subs thing too, if they shitcan the software in 5 years do you get a refund? or do they give you the servers?

The lifetime subs are about 2 years-worth of regular subs - if LOTRO & STO last over 2 years, I'm quids-in and after 5y I probably wouldn't give a
toss anyway as I'd still be trying to get my 1st WoW character to max level.
If not, I suspect the lifetime fees will have been pwnd by the creditors winding the business up.
Anyway - quit griping, log in and start molesting tribbles.

I doubt this will disappear so quickly it has a much wider following than LOTR and Cryptic seem to be big trekkies themselves which always helps...
New patch today lifted the level cap and I'm off to find DS9 as soon as I can get in....
